Haddo Estate


The Estate employs 23 permanent staff, as well as 2 seasonal workers, across a wide variety of roles which reflect the diversity of the activities carried out at Haddo. An overview of these roles and the responsibilities they involve can be found below:

  • Factor

    – overall responsibility for the business and enterprises carried out at Haddo

  • Farm manager– overall responsibility for the management of the Farm and its employees

  • Assistant factor– assitant to both the Factor and the Farm manager, primarily overseeing forestry activities, health and safety and co-ordination of repairs and maintenance

  • Estate secretaryresponsible for the administration of the Estate Office and for liaising with Estate staff and residents, including prospective tenants

  • Two accounts staff (part-time)responsible for Estate finances and expenses, and the payment of Estate staff

  • Office assistant (part-time) – provides administrative support to the Estate secretary

  • Two joinersresponsible for day-to-day repairs and improvements, but also available to undertake major construction and renovation projects

  • Painter/joiner assistant responsible for exterior and interior paintwork, and available to assist joiners

  • Two masons variety of responsibilities, including repairs to houses, slating, building and maintenance of stone walls, bridges etc, and upkeep of the biomass boilers

  • Handyman/drainer variety of responsibilities, including domestic drainage and water supplies work, field drainage, digging field troughs, laying new road surfaces, road maintenance and maintenance of gardens, drives and paths

  • Two foresters (one seasonal)resposnible for day-to-day maintenance of plantations, co-ordination of felling and thinning, running the sawmill, harvesting and selling firewood, maintaining supply of wood chip for biomass boilers

  • Two gamekeepers responsible for the efficient operation of the game department and the running of 35 days’ shooting from mid-October to late January

  • Three farm staff (one seasonal)responsible for the day-to-day running of the Farm

  • One gardener responsible for the maintenance of the walled garden and the supply of horticultural produce for the Haddo Estate Shop, and assistant to handyman on a variety of other tasks

Assistant Factor: Susan Shand

Mark Andrew

Mark Andrew is a Fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and a Fellow of the Central Association of Agricultural Valuers. He has been the Resident Factor of Haddo Estate since 1991.

In addition to the management of Haddo Estate, Mark is also involved with the management of other Estates in Aberdeenshire, providing advice to landowners and farmers. He is the Clerk of the Ythan District Fishery Board, Vice Chairman of Formartine Partnership Ltd. and a Director of Haddo Country Park Forum Ltd. He is also a Surveyor Member of the Private Rented Housing Panel.

Susan Shand

Susan is a Member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, having gained her HND in Agriculture from the Harper Adams Agricultural College, from where she consequently received her MSc in Rural, Environment, Amenity and Land Management.

Born and bred just outside Durham City, she worked for a hill farming partnership running four farms in the North West Pennines before eventually moving to Scotland. In addition to her responsibilities as Assitant Factor, she is a standby bat casework officer for Scottish Natural Heritage. In late 2011 she married Graham Shand, the Estate Forester, with whom she shares the former Gardener’s Cottage on the Estate.

Her many interests include fell walking, country sports, working collies, cooking (to her great surprise!) and reading, not forgetting bats and red squirrels.
