Haddo Trout Fishery

Located at Keithfield, the Haddo Trout Fishery was opened in early 2002 by Mike Barrio. The loch is stocked regularly with premium quality trout, and can be fished either from traditional rowing boats or float tubes using barbless or de-barbed flies. It generally operates on a catch and release basis, with no bag limits, though a rainbow trout in excellent condition could be kept for eating at the angler’s discretion. The rules of the Fishery can be read here.

The largest rainbow trout to be caught on the Fishery weighed in at 18lbs 12oz, and the record for most trout caught and released in a 4 hour session is 51.

The fishery is open daily from 9:30.  Session prices for 2011 are as follows:

Session duration (hours)

Price per angler (£)

Up to 4 15.00
Up to 6 17.50
Up to 8 20.00

Facilities at the Fishery include:

  • Fishing hut with toilet and tea/coffee facilities
  • Rowing boats (with anchors, landing nets and buoyancy aids)
  • Float tubes (with neoprene waders and flippers)
  • Tackle hire is available for £5.00 per session (includes rod, reel, nylon and flies)

Mike Barrio

Mike Barrio was brought up in the South Island of New Zealand, then went on to spend many years in Northern Spain before moving to Aberdeenshire in the mid-1980s. A passionate angler, Mike enjoys nothing better than a few hours fishing on the River Don, and has been running Haddo Trout Fishery since he opened the venue for fly fishing in early 2002. Mike is a self confessed "fly line geek", and designs his own range, Barrio Fly Lines, which are manufactured in the UK and can be found all over the world.
